Document Details : Title: κριϑολογία and κριϑολογηϑῆναι Author(s): MAYERSON, Philip Journal: Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists Volume: 41 Date: 2004 Pages: 127-137 DOI: 10.2143/BASP.41.0.3275419 Abstract : A summary of my conclusions on the meaning of κριϑολογία is presented first. Having observed the term in P.Oxy. XVI 2021 and its definition in LSJ9, I recalled my treatment of κριϑοπυρον in Ptolemaic documents (ZPE 141 [2002] 210-3) and concluded that there was no difference between the two terms; namely, that cῖτοc/πυρόc in Egypt was a deliberate mixture of wheat and barley, and that in order to produce Egyptian wheat that was considered 'pure wheat', barley and other contaminants in it had to be eliminated. Egyptians apparently coined the word κριϑολογία to describe that process. κριϑολογία also took on a concrete collective meaning of a 'shipment(s) or cargo(es) of pure wheat' as in Theodosian Code 14.26.1. |
