On sait que les Kouchans dominèrent l’Inde du nord des 1er au 3e siècles de n.è., époque de bouleversements religieux et artistiques dont les effets se font encore sentir. Le livre comprend, à la suite du corpus de textes, deux synthèses sur les religions des Kouchans, deux études de cas à la fois politiques et religieuses, et la publication d’une fortification des environs de Bactres. La longueur de l’article s’explique par l’importance du livre et l’attention portée par son auteur (G.F.) aux problèmes de méthode. This article is a review of Kushan Histories, a book edited by H. Falk who is also its main contributor. The first part of the book prints the entire corpus of ancient texts containing informations on the Kushans and their Yuezhi-s ancestors. They are presented in chronological order, in the original language and in traduction, and commented upon. The Kushans, as is well known, were in possession of Northern India and Western Central Asia during the first three c. A.D., a time of major religious and artistic changes in these countries. Following the corpus of texts, one will find two syntheses on the religions of the Kushans, two papers on documents whose import is both political and religious, and the sketch of a fortification discovered north of Bactra. The length of the article is due both to the importance of the book and the desire of its author to put the emphasis more on methodological problems than on details. |
