Abstract :

The article examines the philosophical question of the end of the world by comparing its treatment by Jacques Derrida and Martin Heidegger. We first summarise the Heideggerian concept of the world. We then present Derrida’s understanding of the end of the world as its deconstruction. Derrida strikingly opposes Heidegger with his view of death of the other as «end of the world each time unique». In «No apocalypse, not now» he also examines the idea of the total destruction of the world and of humanity, which opens the dimension of the future in a way that differs from Heidegger. In the last part, setting out from the terms Entweltlichung and Unwelt, we present Heidegger’s thought on the end of the world: the latter is not an image of the future, but a hermeneutic of the disintegration of the present world. In conclusion we raise the question of how to express adequately the end of the world.
