Au cours des paragraphes qui vont suivre, et en nous appuyant sur de nombreux exemples, nous relaterons les circonstances de l’apparition puis de la disparition progressive de cette hagiotoponymie. Comme nous le verrons, l’affirmation de l’identité linguistique culturelle peut s’avérer délicate au sein de groupes dont les territoires sont contigus ou lorsqu’ils partagent un même territoire. Although Catholic hagiotoponymy was prominent in Canadian Prairie Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) during the period before colonization (1870-1930), it had significantly declined by the turn of the twentieth century. Using many examples in the steps required, this paper addresses the circumstances related to the appearance and the gradual disappearance of this hagiotoponymy. As we shall see, the affirmation of cultural and linguistic identity through toponymy can sometimes prove to be a delicate undertaking among groups with adjoining territories as well as with those sharing the same space. Obwohl die katholische Hagionymie in den kanadischen Prärieprovinzen (Alberta, Saskatchewan und Manitoba) in der vorkolonialen Epoche (1870-1930) eine bedeutende Rolle gespielt hatte, ging dieser Teil des Ortsnamenbestandes bis zum 20. Jh. signifikant zurück. Der Aufsatz setzt sich zum Ziel, anhand einer Vielzahl von Beispielen die Umstände aufzuzeigen, die für die Herausbildung und den allmählichen Rückgang der Hagiotoponymie verantwortlich waren. Es wird verdeutlicht, dass der Ausdruck der kulturellen und sprachlichen Identität in der Toponymie sich zuweilen als ein komplexer Aushandlungsgegenstand zwischen Gruppen aus benachbarten Territorien sowie aus dem gleichen geographischen Gebiet erweist. |
