Abstract :

This paper presents the life story of Tup, an assistant of the orientalist Etienne Aymonier during his exploration of Laos and Siam. Son of a high ranking Cambodian official, Tup covered large distances to explore these territories and to collect inscriptions. His field notes have been used by Aymonier to write his Voyage au Laos. During the 1885 rebellion, Tup joined the Garde indigène. In 1898, he became an official in the royal administration, but fell soon after and had to flee into exile.
