Abstract :
These pages try to take stock of the archaeological data and of anthropological studies of the cemeteries of Khirbet Qumran, and to establish a status quaestionis based on verifiable observations. They confirm the distinction between the tombs of the Essenes dated to Periods Ia-b and II and the tombs of bedouins in the 2nd millennium. Further, the funerary practices of celibate Essenes agree totally with their belief in the resurrection of the flesh as clearly presented in the notice of Hippolytus of Rome, far from the more common belief in immortality of the soul which Flavius Josephus attributes to them.
