Document Details : Title: De ideologie onder de Amerikaanse Intelligent Design-beweging Subtitle: Een studie naar de motieven van verzet tegen de evolutietheorie Author(s): SMEDES, Taede A. Journal: Tijdschrift voor Theologie Volume: 49 Issue: 2 Date: 2009 Pages: 173-192 DOI: 10.2143/TVT.49.2.3203467 Abstract : In recent years, the intelligent design (ID) movement has triggered discussions in Europe about the plausibility of evolutionary theory. Mostly debates are on the interpretation of scientific data supporting evolutionary theory. This article bypasses the scientific debate to argue that ID is essentially about something entirely different. This article studies the (ID) movement’s motives for rejecting Darwin’s evolutionary theory. The article’s heart is the claim that the American ID movement is about neither religion, nor science, but is about the establishment of a conservative Christian moral vision that intends to renew Western society. ID is above all an ideology; its skirmishes around the scientific aspects of evolutionary theory are epiphenomena. This article analyses publications by William Dembski, Phillip Johnson, Nancey Pearcey, all prominent American ID adherents, and the Wedge-document. |
