Abstract :

During the 1950s, Edward Schillebeeckx had developed a thoroughly sacramental vision on reality. It was based on his studies De sacramentele heilseconomie (1952) and Christus sacrament van de Godsontmoeting (1959) (Christ the Sacrament, 1963). This article shows that this fundamental inspiration is of major importance for Schillebeeckx’s response to the Second Vatican Council that was about to be convened. After the council was announced, Schillebeeckx published a number of articles emphasizing the theological legitimacy and expedience of a council, and formulated a series of important ecclesiological starting points for it. He contributed to the vota formulated by the Catholic University of Nijmegen, and was engaged by the Dutch bishops for the preparation of their Church communities for the council shortly after. His contribution to the noteworthy letter of the Dutch bishops about the council (1961) brought him international renown, but also notoriety in some circles. At the start of the council, he was appointed consultor to the Dutch episcopate. Commentaries and opinions before the start of the council show that he quickly gained an important role in raising the awareness of the public opinion and the leaders of the church that this presented a chance for the renewal of both theology and the structures of the church.
