Dr. E. Schillebeeckx’ per 1 januari 1961 bij uitgeverij Desclée de Brouwer te Breda en Brugge een nieuw tijdschrift zou verschijnen onder de titel Tijdschrift voor Theologie. Als de opstellers van het persbericht één ding duidelijk wensten te maken, dan was het wel dat hier iets heel nieuws ging gebeuren. Zij gingen ervan uit dat ‘door het medium van de heilsgeschiedenis van Israël, van de mens geworden Zoon en van de Kerk, de heilsboodschap van God zich tot alle mensen richt, dus ook tot de nu levende mensen’. Dat had tot gevolg dat ‘deze heilsboodschap telkens opnieuw in betrekking moet worden gebracht tot de eigentijdse geestessituatie van de mensen, die in deze tijden en in deze wereld het Woord van God beluisteren’. Juist hierdoor zou het geloof de ‘geestelijke situatie van het mensdom mede bepalen en richten’. Bij deze ontwikkeling, die de oprichters samenvatten onder de noemer ‘geloofsassimilatie’, vervulde de theologie een ‘onvervangbare functie’. De theologie moest, zonder aan wetenschappelijkheid in te boeten, behulpzaam zijn bij het opnieuw doordenken van de boodschap van het evangelie vanuit actuele vraagstukken. Van deze ‘levensnabije theologie’ wilde het nieuwe tijdschrift een ‘sprekend uitdrukkingsorgaan’ worden. In 1961, the first issue of Tijdschrift voor Theologie was published. Its editorial argued that a new journal was urgently needed. Not just theology, but also the church and the world were changing at such a rapid pace that a ‘reliable guide’ was needed for anyone wanting to find their bearings and reflect on these developments. During the years of the Second Vatican Council and under the guidance of Edward Schillebeeckx, the journal would become a platform for discussion for anything concerning the council, the issues it dealt with and the implementation of the modernizations it decided on. Towards the end of the 1960’s however, theology lost its important position as the main advisor in affairs of the church to sociology, and Tijdschrift voor Theology had to find a new role. Initially, it would find this in a fundamental engagement in current social and political issues, which were analysed from a theological perspective, but later, it developed into an academic journal. The discussions about current affairs were no longer its main focus, and the attention shifted to academic theological discussions. In this article, I will trace the history of Tijdschrift voor Theologie as both the mirror and the motor of the theological culture of the (catholic) Netherlands since the 1960’s. The editors have been trying the find the answer to the question of how theology could maintain its relevance in a changing world, from a scientific, a social as well as an ecclesiastic point of view. The answer to that question has changed during the history of the journal, but the journal itself has remained an important factor because of the great stature it has enjoyed right from the start. After a historical analysis, in which I will contrast editorial developments and developments with respect to content to the larger context of the history of the church, I will try to answer the question whether Tijdschrift voor Theologie still lives up to the task the first editors set themselves. In doing so, I hope to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the role and the position of religion, church and theology in the secularized Netherlands. |
