Abstract :

At John 4:42, the Samaritans oddly recognize Jesus as 'savior of the world', a pagan phrase. But this can be understood as their switching away from Simon Magus, a Samaritan who was later deemed to be the 'forerunner of all the heresies'. The statement is transformed into 'salvation is from the Jews' in Jesus’ speech, when he addresses the Samaritan woman, who is poorly connected to her sixth 'husband' Simon.
