After setting out the hermeneutical prior understanding, which reads Amoris laetitia in the light of Pope Francis’ programmatic Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii gaudium, the article illuminates the two foundational pastoral principles – 'Realities are greater than ideas' and 'Time is greater than space' – from a moral-psychological perspective. As options of a charitable pastoral care that is sensitive to people’s biographies, they require the pastoral attitudes of mercy and humility, in order to do justice to the realities of people’s lives and their life stories; at the same time, they demand that the Church should reflect in a healthy manner on how it talks and acts. One consequence of this pastoral orientation of evangelization is the appreciation of the conscience and the importance of the formation of a personal judgment in the forum internum, as well as the promotion of personal religious and moral growth in the relationships in which one lives. Concrete models and counsels can offer an orientation here. When it is read anew from a moral-psychological perspective, Amoris laetitia can be understood as the Magna Charta of a pastoral care that is both demanding and charitable. |
