Document Details : Title: HOUSE and HOME and their Semantic Intricacies in a Historical Perspective Author(s): DEKEYSER, Xavier Journal: Leuvense Bijdragen - Leuven Contributions in Linguistics and Philology Volume: 101 Date: 2017 Pages: 21-32 DOI: 10.2143/LB.101.0.3194371 Abstract : It can be inferred from the etymological data given in the OED sub home and house that the home-house duality was present in all the primitive Germanic languages. We shall illustrate this for English in particular, making use of the rich English data in the OED and MED as our source material, which will allow us to demonstrate that prototypically the lexical items involved are only near synonyms and that, consequently, each of them developed a semantic structure of their own. After an overall survey of the available data we will resume this issue in some more detail in section 3 at the end of this article. |
