Abstract :

David Cazès, the founder of the first Alliance Israelite School in Tunis in 1878, is known thanks to this work, but also thanks to his talents as a writer and the first 'modern' historian of the Jews of Tunisia. It is through the reading, the analysis and the interpretation of his work that we can attempt to sketch his portrait and to evaluate his role. The rich and regular correspondence maintained by Cazès with the central administration of the Alliance Israelite in Paris allows us to formulate a profile of the man who succeeded to shape an idea and to initiate this work which would spread to such a scale as to reach the entire Jewish society of Tunisia and to mark a turning point in its contemporary history.
