Author(s): GUIGNARD, Christophe Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 92 Issue: 3 Date: 2016 Pages: 487-504 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.92.3.3170057 Abstract : While Titus’ link with Crete is rooted in the New Testament (Tit 1,5), the short apocryphal Acts of Titus (6th century?) presents their hero as a native Cretan, an idea that is firmly rooted in the hagiographical traditions about him. However, the last chapter of the Acts of Titus, which contains a chronological summary of the saints’ life (ch. 12), shows important discrepancies with the rest of the narrative. The significance of these discrepancies has not been fully appreciated so far. Indeed, ch. 12 bears the traces of a somewhat divergent and probably older tradition, according to which Titus was not of Cretan origin and evangelised not only in Crete, but also other Greek islands. |
