Abstract :
More than half a century after its initial publication in 1962, De verwondering (Wonder) by Hugo Claus still remains one of the most intriguing and complex postwar novels. An exploration of genetic material concerning this book reveals much about the way the author prepared and constructed his story. By exploring part of this handwritten material we aim to expand the hermeneutic potential of the novel by both strengthening pre-existing interpretations and by suggesting new interpretative roads and raising new questions for further research. This article focuses on the way explanatory schemes, secret social codes and almost hidden references functioned during the genesis of De verwondering.
