Abstract :

Readers of the Book of Judith are immediately confronted with the question of the reliability of the narrator: 'In the twelfth year of Nebuchadnezzar, who reigned over the Assyrians at Nineveh, the great city, in the days of Arphaxad, who reigned over the Medes at Ecbatana' (Jdt 1,1). What should one think of a story which takes the appearance of an historical account to communicate information which proves to be false? Our article proposes to analyze several significant passages in the Book of Judith from the angle of the reliability/non-reliability of the narrator, considering, in particular, the coherence of the story, the question of the implicit reader, and the establishment of the 'reader-writer contract'.
