Subtitle: Europe, Asylum and Catholic Social Thought Author(s): ROWLANDS, Anna Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 39 Issue: 1 Date: 2015-16 Pages: 3-21 DOI: 10.2143/LS.39.1.3144263 Abstract : Human mobility is fast becoming a defining hallmark of our times, and yet theological ethics is only just beginning to reflect theologically on the significance of this fact. This article offers an analysis of trends in recent European policy, with a particular focus on a UK context. Following from a mapping of some of the most significant trends in European migration practice the article presents a theo-political analysis of immigration detention as a social practice. Teaching on migration from Catholic social teaching is critically evaluated as a potential theological resource for responding to the European context. Finally this article argues that to be of service to migrants on the move and the political reflection of the so-called settled Catholic social teaching will need to come to a greater degree of maturity in its reflections on the interactive dynamics of liberal democracy and late capitalism. |
