Abstract :
From its very beginnings Latin America’s theology has considered very carefully the relation between theory and practice, defining itself as a critical reflection on historical practice. In solidarity with the poor and their struggles for liberation, this theology has been able to recognize the close nexus between theory and practice, it has revealed the ideological interests of those theories that, although being declared neutral, have promoted and still promote situations of injustice, poverty and dominance, and have proposed historical liberating practice as the ethical horizon of all theory. In all of this there has been an undeniable contribution from liberation theology that we want to hold in esteem. However, to make this contribution more effective, we think it is necessary to recognize and overcome the empirical deficit that has accompanied this theology, which has not happened by just referring to concepts like history, practice or the signs of the times. We propose that it is necessary to deepen the mutual implication of theory and empirical research, to abandon the idea that the social sciences were a merely instrumental and external resource for theology, and to advance towards a more critical understanding of reality. Only in this way can science and theology meet their ethical responsibility of facing the multiple challenges from our history.
