Il commence par situer et montrer la pertinence d’une telle conception dans une vision scientifique, principalement évolutionniste, du monde. En particulier, il rétablit la possibilité métaphysique d’une émergence forte, nécessaire à la liberté mais exclue à la fois par le réductionnisme et le dualisme. L’article dégage ensuite les caractères spécifiques de la vision polanyienne et leurs conséquences directes pour la liberté humaine. Ces caractères sont: son architecture, son principe, son critère, et son finalisme. Ils dessinent ensemble une vision équilibrée, à la fois scientifique et humaniste, de la liberté. Polanyi aboutit ainsi à une anthropologie naturellement transcendante, dans laquelle la liberté apparaît comme le projet secret de la vie, enfin révélé dans l’émergence de l’homme. This article studies Michaël Polanyi’s (1891-1976) contribution to an emergentist conception of freedom. It first contextualizes and brings out the relevance of such a conception within a scientific, and essentially evolutionary, world view. In particular, we reestablish the metaphysical possibility of strong emergence, which is required for freedom but excluded by both reductionism and dualism. The article next exposes the specific characteristics of Polanyi’s vision and their immediate consequences on human freedom. These characteristics, namely its architecture, its principle, its criterion, and its finalism, outline a balanced scientific and humanistic vision of freedom. We conclude that Polanyi leads us to a «naturally transcendent» anthropology, in which freedom arises as life’s secret undertaking, finally revealed by the emergence of man. |
