Document Details : Title: Towards a Fourth Model of Sex Education in Africa Author(s): MAMUZO MUKORO, Jude Journal: Marriage, Families & Spirituality Volume: 21 Issue: 2 Date: 2015 Pages: 157-169 DOI: 10.2143/INT.21.2.3134526 Abstract : Ethnographic observations and review of cultural texts have allowed the author to delineate three main African models of education, and in extension sex education. These are the experiential, observational and catechetical models of sex education. In this article, the author is going to present a comprehensive version of what sex education essentially is, followed by a cursory presentation of the African conception of sex and sexuality in order to situate this discourse within the African context. Then the article outlines the three typical African models of sex education, before demonstrating the inadequacy of these models of sex education in the authentic communication of the values and knowledge concerning sex and sexuality. On a final note, the author makes recourse to the hermeneutic-communicative model of education and argues that this model is a more effective and adequate model in the communication of the values and knowledge distinctive of a good sex education. |
