Author(s): WASSILIOU-SEIBT, Alexandra-Kyriaki Journal: Revue des Études Byzantines Volume: 73 Date: 2015 Pages: 229-239 DOI: 10.2143/REB.73.0.3132049 Abstract : The article reconsiders the establishment of the military districts (themata) of Makedonia, Strymon, Thessaloniki and Neos Strymon according to the few literary sources and the sigillographic evidence. The author dates the creation of the Themata of Makedonia and Strymon to the end of the 8th century, while the Thema of Thessaloniki, of a lower rank, was established at the turning point of the 8th to the 9th century. During the reign of Romanos I Lekapenos, the region around the Rupel pass was strengthened by the addition of a Kleisurarch to blunt more efficiently Bulgarian assaults, especially in the early years of tsar Peter. Ioannes Tzimiskes then established the Thema of Neos Strymon at the north of the Rupel, a kind of prolongation of the old Thema of Strymon which was called, for a short time, Στρυμὼν ἤτοι Χρυσάβα. The identification of Chrysaba with Krousobon (Achladochori) or Kricuva (Karydochori) is dismissed. L’article reconsidère la création des districts militaires (thèmes) de Macédoine, du Strymon et de Thessalonique à partir de la documentation littéraire et sigillographique. L’auteur date la création des thèmes de Macédoine et du Strymon de la fin du 8e siècle tandis que le thème de Thessalonique, d’un rang inférieur, fut établi au tournant des 8e-9e siècles. Durant le règne de Romain Ier Lécapène, la région autour des gorges de Roupel fut renforcée par l’adjonction d’un cleisourarque pour contrer plus efficacement les assauts bulgares, en particulier dans les premières années du tsar Pierre. Jean Tzimiskès établit alors le thème du Nouveau Strymon au nord du Roupel, sorte de prolongation du vieux thème du Strymon, ce dernier étant pour un temps appelé Στρυμὼν ἤτοι Χρυσάβα. L’identification de Chrysaba avec Krousobon (Achladochori) et Kricuva (Krydochori) est repoussée. |
