Abstract :
The birth of a disabled child, or a later injury or illness leading to a severe impairment in a child of any age can have a profound impact on a marriage. Contrary to public expectation, such a profound life event does not always damage or diminish a marriage, but can instead provide the glue that a marriage – even a struggling marriage – needs to reach a deeper level of maturity. This article touches on some of the evidence and reflects on some of the challenges that intellectual disability presents to families and to the wider church community.
