Abstract :

A brief outline of the mission as the mandate to conquer the world for Christ and of the subsequent fine-tuning of this notion by theologians is followed by a presentation of Ad Gentes defining the mission of the Church as a continuation of the Missio Dei in the world. The almost unanimously approved decree was warmly welcomed in the Catholic Church and far beyond, be it not without hesitations and criticisms. One could call it a creative reception, first of all by the Roman magisterium, leading to a new missionary era. The last part of the article is a reflection on the ecclesial realization of God’s mission in the world, taking into account the insights of Vatican II and recent developments in missionary fieldwork. The following topics are dealt with: the link between mission and interreligious dialogue, the proclamation of the Gospel in view of the emergence and development of communities witnessing to Jesus Christ, the social dimension of evangelization and the role of missionary institutes in a Church that views itself as essentially missionary.
