Document Details : Title: Raster, album, rest Subtitle: Vandersteen à l'oeuvre Author(s): BAETENS, Jan Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 57 Issue: 1 Date: 2015 Pages: 29-47 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.57.1.3066764 Abstract : At a general level, this article deals with the complex relationship between repetition and innovation in literature: we defend the general stance that certain forms of apparently repetitive literature can be innovative as well. Corpuswise, this article focuses on a very specific type of literature, namely comics, a field that is often accused of emphasizing repetition at the expense of innovation. The concrete example of Willy Vandersteen, a mastermind in Belgian comics story art, will help demonstrate that the play with innovation and repetition can only be discussed in a thorough way by taking into account certain aspect of the materiality and the cultural and industrial context of the work: its publication format, its serialization, the possibility to shift from one format to another. |
