The survey deals with values and attitudes of Catholic adolescents. It focuses on topics like marriage, religious values, sexuality, family, and partnership. These moral concepts are compared with the positions and the attitudes of the general German population. The Youth Catechism is used as representative of the official Catholic teaching. The first goal of the study was to find out whether there is a discrepancy between the official position of the Catholic Church and the way family life is practiced. The second aim was to investigate whether Christian youth accept traditional family types or prefer new ways. The Jugendwertstudie took place in 2010 and 2012. Overall, 300 German Catholic adolescents were questioned. They were between the ages of 16 and 21 and were actively involved in the Catholic Church. Their parents were also questioned in the same survey, so that the results could be compared across generations. Statistical analysis shows interesting results in all fields, especially different orien tations between the two generations and between Catholic and average German teenagers. The young Catholics are more religious and prefer traditional family structures. They are also a bit older when they have their first sexual experience and would like to have more children than those desired by other teenagers. Furthermore, there seems to exist a special Catholic milieu that shares particular value orientations founded on religious concepts. |
