Abstract :
This article deals with Romanian cultural and religious life, including sacred music, in the western part of Romania (Bihor), a most remarkable ethnical and religious region where Romanians, Hungarians, Jews and other nationalities coexisted, adhering to different faith communities: Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Byzantine Catholics, Protestants, Jews, etc. Although the western tradition there has often been dominant, especially because of strong Hungarian influence, the article concentrates on the Roman-Dacian roots and their traces throughout the centuries. These traces reveal a Greek-Roman-Romanian synthesis with Eastern characteristics.
