Abstract :

The present article aims to assess the context in which the Second Vatican Council declaration Dignitatis humanae on religious freedom was adopted. We then look at its reception, and reflect on present perspectives, a half-century after its publication. In the aftermath of its turbulent gestation, the text brought the Catholic Church into modern politics and the era of pluralism. The effect of the declaration can be seen through the diplomatic action of the Holy See and the evolution of the legal status of the Church in various national legislations. However, it has its virulent opponents, even leading to a schism on the part of the fundamentalist minority. In order to ensure religious freedom today, in a new context, and in light of the perspectives opened up by Dignitatis humanae, we must first envisage our perspective on Human Rights in relation to religious freedom worldwide, then take into account the requests for freedom and participation within the Catholic Church, and finally work on theological perspectives which strike a balance between testimony and dialogue in a time of pluralism.
