Some passages from his discourses are now more relevant than ever as the task that theology has in the church and in society is a matter of controversy, a state of affairs that in the end results from the internal structure of the understanding of theology within the church. But, the paper asks, what is the position of theology with regard to one of the basic functions of the church – namely, how the church influences public opinion – in a secular society, in which publicity and opinion-forming takes place under different presuppositions? This arc of suspense opens with a historical survey of the problem and is then sharpened by theological and sociological questions about the systematic problem of the task of theology in today’s society. The starting-point of this investigation is that without her theology the Catholic Church will not be able to deal with a dialogue with modern society and its functional differences. Il y a 150 ans, les vastes écrits de l’historien de l’Église Ignaz von Döllinger étaient marqués par la question de la situation de la théologie au sein de l’Église et de la société, de ses méthodes de travail et de son orientation nécessaire vers l’université. Certaines de ses considérations sont aujourd’hui plus pertinentes que jamais. Ainsi, le fait que le travail théologique dans l’Église et la société soit matière à controverse est, en fin de compte, dû à la structure interne de la compréhension de la théologie dans l’Église. Mais, se demande-t-on dans l’article, quelle est la position de la théologie par rapport à une des fonctions essentielles de l’Église – à savoir l’influence qu’elle a sur l’opinion publique – dans une société sécularisée, où différents présupposés sous-tendent la publicité et la formation de l’opinion? La réflexion s’organise à partir d’une étude historique du problème et se précise à l’aide de questions théologiques et sociologiques portant sur la tâche de la théologie dans la société d’aujourd’hui. Sans sa théologie, l’Église catholique ne pourra pas dialoguer avec la société moderne dans la diversité de son fonctionnement: telle est l’hypothèse de cette enquête. |
