Abstract :
The relation between theologians and the Roman magisterium, and especially the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, is often loaded with tension and conflict. So, in the stress of the conferral of the missio canonica and nihil obstat procedures, some theologians encounter difficulties (overlaid with disciplinary measures) about publications that seem moderate but are judged problematical by the CDF. The situation is not about personal sensitivities but about the fundamental relationship between theology and the magisterium, about the self-understanding of theology, about the understanding of one’s 'churchliness', about the question of what task and function the magisterium confers on theological research, and what academic freedom it grants to theologians. ET has been confronted by these questions for many years and has been working for a constructive interchange with the Roman Curia. This paper will next call to mind conversations that have taken place since the founding of ET, and then engage in some basic reflections on the relation between theology and the church’s teaching office, in which important themes and several sensitive points in this dialogue will be identified, but also perspectives for the continuation of the dialogue will be pointed out. Some data and background information is provided, which can help to illuminate the tensions that we expect between theologians and the magisterium from the perspectives of both sides, with the intention of overcoming mutual reservations and serving a constructive dialogue grounded on trust.
