Document Details : Title: Middelnederlandse vertaaltechnieken gespiegeld Subtitle: De West-Vlaamse Spieghel der menscheliker behoudenesse en de Utrechtse Spieghel onser behoudenisse Author(s): ROBBE, Joost Journal: Ons Geestelijk Erf Volume: 85 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2014 Pages: 39-67 DOI: 10.2143/OGE.85.1.3032693 Abstract : This article compares the two Middle Dutch tanslations of the Speculum Humanae Salvationis: the West Flemish verse translation, Spieghel der Menscheliker Behoudenesse (ca. 1375-1400), and the Utrecht prose translation, Spieghel onser Behoudenisse (ca. 1460). It argues that, in the West Flemish verse translation, the Speculum Humanae Salvationis underwent a double transformation. Firstly, it was adapted to fit the poetic context of the West Flemish literary tradition and, secondly, it was tailored to educate the contemporary lay audience, whereby the translator clarified and narrated the text as well as corrected and moralised on its content. In contrast, the Utrecht translation is much closer to the original Latin and is primarily concerned with providing clear terminology. |
