Abstract :

What exactly is this «religious» which is said by Marcel Gauchet to subsist «after religion»? Does this phenomenon rise to the status of a genuine social fact or does it only serve on the margins of modernity in a deferred way? Does the vagueness that follows result from the joint presence of two philosophies of history in Marcel Gauchet? Do we find in him a contradiction between his vocation as a scholar and his political convictions? Why does Marcel Gauchet not draw all of the consequences of the recommendations concerning method that he formulates himself, thereby denying natural development to his own intuitions? His thesis of the political whose permanence would survive its changes, combined with his reading of the «liberal reversal», led to the prospect of a proposal that remained incomplete.
