This attempt amounted to distinguishing the roles and legitimacy of what came to be called ‘positive theology’ and ‘speculative theology’. The article gives special attention to the Saulchoir Dominicans, especially Ambrose Gardeil and his regressive method, whereby the groundwork is laid for keeping positive and speculative theologies together. The article further shows how J.H.Newman’s Essay on Development featured in Gardeil’s legitimization of his synthesis between positive and speculative theologies. The article then turns to a discussion of the intellectual virtues. B. Lonergan shows how phronesis (with reference to Newman) is employed in positive theological work; Congar, shows the role that scientia plays in speculative theology. |
