De fait, le jeune étudiant de Princeton défendait manifestement une conception relativement forte de la communauté, refusant le principe même d’une théorie politique au sens qu’il défendra dans Political Liberalism, et martelant avec conviction la nécessité de faire reposer toute éthique sur une anthropologie fondatrice. Mais ce qui semble à première vue être un hiatus dans la pensée du philosophe américain, un jeu, voire une errance de jeunesse, se révèle être en pleine adéquation avec le Rawls de la maturité, à la condition d’accepter de réviser un certain nombre de présupposés aujourd’hui consacrés qui floutent la vision et le projet rawlsiens. On the occasion of the posthumous publication of Rawl’s master’s thesis, the reader discovers with a degree of astonishment a relatively striking «metaphysical tendency» in this author who, some thirty years later, would become of the champions of procedural liberalism. Thus the young student at Princeton manifestly defended a relatively strong conception of the community, refusing the very principle of political theory in the sense he defended in Political Liberalism and insisting with conviction on the need to base any ethics on an anthropology as its foundation. But that which appears at first sight to be a hiatus in the thought of the American philosopher, a game, or even a youthful error, turns out to be in full harmony with the mature Rawls, provided one agrees to revise a certain number of presuppositions considered established nowadays which confuse Rawl’s vision and project. |
