This paper explores Vatican II’s attention to dialogue and its significance for our time. Its reflections are developed in three stages, beginning from an appreciation of the basic orientation given to the council by Pope John XXIII and other protagonists. Part two gives particular attention to the theology of dialogue developed in the programmatic encyclical of Pope Paul VI, Ecclesiam Suam. Part three examines the council’s engaging style of discourse as well as its teaching on dialogue with society and culture, with other religions, with other Christian churches, and within the Catholic community itself, as a challenge toward receiving this teaching in our day. L’une des leçons les plus importantes du Concile Vatican II (1962-1965), pour notre temps, est enracinée dans l’engagement dialogique de l’Église catholique. Ce document explore l’attention que porte Vatican II au dialogue ainsi que son importance pour notre temps. Les réflexions se déploient en trois étapes, commençant par une appréciation de l’orientation de base donnée au concile par le pape Jean XXIII et d’autres protagonistes. La deuxième partie consacre une attention particulière à la théologie du dialogue développée dans l’encyclique programmatique du Pape Paul VI, Ecclesiam Suam. Puis, la troisième partie examine le style de discours engageant du concile ainsi que son enseignement sur le dialogue avec la société et la culture, les autres religions, les autres Églises chrétiennes, puis le dialogue au sein de la communauté catholique elle-même, en vue de relever le défi de la réception de cet enseignement aujourd’hui. |
