Abstract :

The term ‘initiation’ has come to permeate the field of catechesis as it has that of liturgy. The pioneering work of Abel Pasquier has helped familiarize us with this notion, thanks to his background as an anthropologist both in Africa and in France. But will this term become a victim of its own success, losing in precision as its usage grows? It is worth considering the working hypotheses of Abel Pasquier and asking a few questions: can we find, in our contemporary societies, traces of the 'initiatory archetype' that he identified in his ethnological studies? What meaning can this expression have when it is used for the Christian sacraments?
