Abstract :

The permanent evangelization of the Church today finds itself faced with new situations and contexts. These challenges stimulate it to explore new pathways. One of these was proposed by Benedict XVI in 2009 and implemented by the Pontifical Council for Culture: the Courtyard of the Gentiles. The aim of this initiative is to promote dialogue between believers and non-believers, without proselytising and based on new foundations around human values a dignity. It does so without requiring either group to renounce its own identity, and beyond mutual suspicion. The God question today cannot be separated from a reflection on humanity, and hence the need for this free moment of dialogue within the public space. The objective is the quest for truth, beyond prejudices, divisions and certainties. The Courtyard of the Gentiles, which has biblical origins, seeks to take seriously and to foster the desire for truth that is in all human beings, and which is a 'pathway of the Church'. A call to adapt to the culture of our era while pursuing the mission to evangelize, this encounter is the first step towards evangelization. It plays an important role in itself as a space of encounter, dialogue and exchange. Major meetings at important places are on the programme, though this will not rule out the possibility for local initiatives.
