The author draws up a summary evaluation of the parish reorganisations carried out in the diocese of Montréal. Instead of using a single model, they have opted instead to accompany the communities in discerning the changes to be made. The 'pastoral units' were initially the solution of choice. They remain a valid option in many cases. More recently, there has been a preference for creating larger parishes, the dimension of which often approach those of a neighbourhood or borough. A 'preferential option' for retaining several community poles within these large entities is under consideration, for reasons of proximity and the visibility of the Church. To achieve this aim, creativity is needed: sharing spaces, especially with nearby anglophone Catholic communities and ethnic missions, in order to unify and rethink from the ground up the presence of the Church in the neighbourhood. That is, no doubt, beyond structural change, the greatest challenge of the reorganisations. Pathways proposed by the experience of Poitiers are of interest here: emphasis on the responsibility of all the baptised: reflection on the nature of local communities; transformation in the exercise of the ministry of pastors. |
