The quality of theological education depends on whether one works – or is able to work – indeed scientifically in theology. In contrast to most theologians, who do a very good job in teaching and research, there are certain theological conceptions in Catholic or Protestant domains that work with the notion of a privileged, exclusive and revelational access to truth that can never be questioned, which immunize themselves against scientific criticism and theological progress. The relevance of theology and of the quality of theological education stands or falls with the possibility of scientific progress in theology, that is, with the possibility of a theology capable of learning. La théologie n’est théologie (discours rationnel sur Dieu) que si elle est envisagée – sans aucune restriction – comme une science, au sens d’une recherche ouverte de la vérité. La qualité de la formation théologique varie selon que l’on travaille – ou qu’on a la possibilité de travailler – scientifiquement en théologie. Contrairement à la plupart des théologiens qui font un excellent travail en matière d’enseignement et de recherche, certains, dans le monde catholique ou protestant, parce qu’ils fonctionnent avec la notion d’un accès à la vérité privilégié, exclusif, et révélé de manière incontestable, ont une conception théologique qui les protège de la critique scientifique et du progrès théologique. La pertinence de la théologie et de la qualité de la formation théologique dépend de la possibilité du progrès scientifique en théologie, c’est-à-dire de la possibilité d’avoir une théologie capable d’apprendre. |
