These texts were written by John Tauler, Master Eckhart, Jordanus von Quedlinburg, Alijt Bake and several anonymous authors. Alijt Bake, a fifteenth-century nun, seems out of place among these fourteenth-century male mystics. However, this article argues that her texts are the key to understanding the Brussels, KB, 643-44, IIa collection. Bake used the theme and structure of the texts by von Quedlinburg for her own texts. As an admirer of Tauler, she also added a preexisting text complex to her manuscript and enriched this collection with a variety of texts that discuss themes which are highly relevant to her own ideas. The manuscript can therefore be observed as an anthology of her ideas; in effect, it was part of what she considered to be her divine mission, namely teaching people how to reach God. |
