Abstract :
In the Byzantine tradition, faith in the triune God is spiritual core knowledge which expresses itself in worship and is reflected in numerous texts and rituals. This article at first delineates the ‘role’ of the Holy Trinity in the liturgical services in general, and then focuses on the Eucharist. Subsequently, the three festivals of Epiphany, Transfiguration, and Pentecost are briefly investigated, and then attention is paid to various pictorial representations of the Holy Trinity, especially to the Trinity icon by Andrei Rublev. Thereafter, the importance of corporality and religious popular culture is emphasized, and asceticism and everyday life are examined. In the epilogue some final observations are made. Occasionally concise comparisons with Western Christian traditions are embarked upon.
