Il a laissé une relation de ces voyages en dix volumes où l’exactitude des descriptions côtoie souvent l’imaginaire d’anecdotes de toutes sortes. Nous examinons ici ce qu’il rapporte au sujet du Gabal-al-Tayr, «Mont aux Oiseaux», sur la rive orientale du Nil, au nord de Minya. Cette falaise est connue comme lieu d’un rassemblement saisonnier d’oiseaux lors de leur migration, mais surtout par le monastery copte très ancien qui s’y trouve, objet d’un pèlerinage commémorant un épisode de l’Évangile et dont Evliyâ ne dit rien. En revanche, notre voyageur associe habilement des éléments disparates (souvenirs d’Istanbul ou de lectures diverses, observations relatives aux pratiques de l’Égypte ancienne) pour produire un récit propre à susciter chez ses lecteurs intérêt et interrogations. During almost half a century, the traveller Evliyâ Çelebî (1611-1684) visited every corner of the Ottoman territory and some neighbouring countries. He left a relation on ten volumes of these travels, where the accuracy of the descriptions often mixes with the fancy of all kind of anecdotes. We propose to examine here what he relates about Gabal-al-Tayr, «Birds’ Mountain», on the Eastern bank of the Nile, North of Minya. This cliff is known as the seasonal gathering place of birds during their migration, but overall for its very ancient Coptic monastery, aim of a pilgrimage celebrating the memory of an episode of the New Testament, ignored by Evliyâ. On the other hand, our traveller skilfully associates disparate elements (memories from Istanbul or from various readings, observations about practices of ancient Egypt) in order to product a narration appropriate to arouse among his readers propre interest and interrogations. |
