Abstract :
From 1365 on William of ’s Gravensande lectured theology in the Carmelite-convent of Haarlem. For several years he was also prior (1368-c. 1373). Willem maintained good relations, because he raised a lot of money for the reconstruction of the convents’ church. About 1386 he was appointed confessor of count Albrecht of Bavaria. On regular times he was present at court, where he was called ‘the confessor’. For Albrechts second wife, Margareth of Cleves William propably wrote Een nuttelijc boek den kerstenen menschen, a collection of catechetic sermons (attuned to each other) and prayers. William the Confessor died at the end of 1404. In recent literature William the Confessor is mistakenly identified with the Carmelite William of Rotterdam, who also taught theology in Haarlem. This William was one generation younger than William the Confessor. He died after 1415 in the Carmelite-convent of Mechlin (B.).
