Abstract :

The article offers a theological interpretation of the Argentine Tango. First of all the author analyses the origins of the tango in the misery and the mixture of cultures in the ports of Buenos Aires and Montevideo in the 19th Century. She interprets the tango ('a sad idea that is danced') as an expression of the desire for a better life and as a mockery of social norms, thus as a transcultural language of being rootless and migrant. Exploring the gender performances of the tango dance one can detect marvellous aspects regarding to its carnival language. Thus, the tango dance from the Río de la Plata is viewed as a form of spiritual language, regarding new experiences with the tango as 'liturgical dance' in worship services. From theological perspective the tango is viewed as body language in relation to the Divine, with special emphasis on the embrace (the tango as 'danced embrace') and 'touch of transcendence'. Highlighting the transcendent character of dancing, which can also be found in biblical texts, the article contributes to the search for an aesthetical theology that is ethical-political at the same time. Furthermore it is a creative contribution to body theology in intercultural perspective.
