Abstract :
This article examines the rise and factors that influenced Zimbabwean onomastics since 1931 up to 2010 and beyond. This discussion submits that pioneering onomastic studies in the 1930s-1979 were done by European researchers who 'acted as ethnographers and anthropologists in a Malinowskian fashion'. Since Zimbabwe attained her independence in 1980, scholars of diverse backgrounds have made significant onomastic publications and conference presentations. Popular areas have been war names, animal names, personal names, product-names, literary names and place names, among others. Zimbabwean onomastics has broadened its horizons by tapping into geography, history, semantics, linguistics, agriculture, religion, literature, pragmatics and semiotics to name a few. Against this background, this article interrogates Zimbabwean onomastics’ achievements, challenges and possible reasons why it is not yet a fully-fledged Zimbabwean academic discipline by 2010, eighty years since its inception, against onomastic achievements in South Africa. This qualitative research prefers a comparative approach so that regional and international lessons could inform the future of Zimbabwean onomastics. The article underscores the significance of onomastics in diachrony and synchrony as people continue to appreciate its multifaceted relevance and applicability in domains people earlier thought it was alien to.
