Ritter jr.: his brochure De sociale beteekenis van de amusements-literatuur, an essay on Dickens and his novella Het verwijt. Research into both the textual features of these works and the institutional context in which they were produced indicates how Ritter’s middlebrow poetics and his views on the social function of literary criticism can be understood against the background of contemporary ideas about the critic as a cultural mediator. |
