Document Details : Title: The Universality and Particularity of Christianity in Edward Schillebeeckx's Theology of Religions Author(s): VAN WIELE, Jan Journal: Studies in Interreligious Dialogue Volume: 22 Issue: 1 Date: 2012 Pages: 5-16 DOI: 10.2143/SID.22.1.2174052 Abstract : This article critically explores the essentials of the theology of religions of the late Edward Schillebeeckx (1914-2009). On the basis of the fundamentals of former Christian theology, he sought a maximum of openness to non-Christian religions. In so doing, he elaborated a theological approach that attempts to bridge the gap between extreme forms of exclusivism and pluralism, absolutism and relativism. The result leads to a variant, adapted to the demands of the time, of the classical Christian inclusivistic theology that, on the one hand, is reminiscent of the corresponding view of Karl Rahner but, on the other, is also original, even if only through its own terminology and Schillebeeckx’s own approach to the problem. |
