Abstract :
The year 2010 saw the publication of two volumes of academic discussions of the work of the Dutch writer Arnon Grunberg. The academic reception of Grunberg’s oeuvre signals a development in the author’s attitude towards irony and commitment and, moreover, enters itself into a critical dialogue with postmodernism. This article reviews the scholarly literature on Grunberg. In their attempt to oppose Grunberg to postmodernism some scholars draw a one-sided and tendentious picture of this complex literary and philosophical phenomenon. Furthermore, concepts such as irony and relativism, and fiction and reality are often used in a reductionist or confusing manner. The aim of this contribution is to analyse such problems in the scientific discourse of the Grunberg study.
