Que ce soit sous la figure du regard transcendantal portant toujours au-delà du simple donné (Mattéi), du regard critique informé par des idéaux universalistes (Dewitte), d’une idéalité rectrice de la réalité (Jullien) ou d’une détotalisation de la clôture (Jullien encore), toutes ces thèses sur l’identité européenne conduisent la thèse d’un accès privilégié de l’homme européen à l’universel. À travers la lecture de ces quatre contributions, on interrogera le rapport qu’elles postulent entre idéalité et universalité, mais aussi entre pensée critique et universalité. Si ce rapport pouvait être mis en question, alors la thèse du lien privilégié de l’Europe à l’universel apparaîtrait comme le résultat d’une double extrapolation, dont aucune n’est convaincante. Contemporary europology is dominated by Husserl’s idea of Europe as a spiritual form with a privileged relationship to the universal. Whether in the form of the transcendental look always leading beyond the simple given (Mattéi), the critical look informed by universalist ideals (Dewitte), an ideality guiding reality (Jullien) or a detotalisation of closure (also Jullien), all of these theses on European identity reinstate the thesis of a privileged access of European man to the universal. Through reading these four contributions we will inquire into the relationship they postulate between ideality and universality, but also between critical thought and universality. If this relationship could be questioned, then the thesis of the privileged bond between Europe and the universal would appear to be the result of a double extrapolation, neither of which is convincing. |
