Abstract :
The paper investigates German brand names for food registered between 1894 and 1994, making reference to subject matters traditionally taught in secondary education. Relevant fields are foreign languages, literature/philosophy, arts, music, history, geography, and the natural sciences. Alluding to knowledge in these fields aims at enhancing the social prestige of the products and their consumers through associations of educatedness and an exclusive lifestyle, accompanied by more specific associations such as exoticism, luxury, and scientific character, depending on the different products and fields of education. The diachronic frequency distribution of such names confirms, on the whole, the claim made by Ronald Inglehard and others that so-called 'postmaterialistic' social values, such as educatedness, are especially appreciated in times of high personal and economic security. In fact, the percentage of names alluding to educatedness was particularly high in 1904 in the German Kaiserreich, before the approach of World War I, and in 1964, at the apogee of the so-called Wirtschaftswunder. As far as individual educational topics are concerned, they are remarkably conservative, compared to the actual social reality, although a certain shift from 'pure' classical topics such as Greek and Latin language and mythology to more applied topics such as the modern languages and light reading can be observed. World War I and II were important thresholds in this respect. On the whole, however, it seems that such names fulfill their purpose better by alluding to a vague, but prestigious knowledge on the part of the customers than by actually appealing to their school education and daily experience. A comparison with brand names from other languages and cultures would be worthwhile.
