Abstract :

The present publication deals with a so far less explored field of onomatology: the denominations of various types of commodities (such as pharmaceutical products, cosmetics, beverages: wines and soft drinks; cakes, chocolates, furniture, etc). In the four major chapters of the paper the following crucial problems are dealt with: 1. The definition of trade-names. The criteria of good and bad trade-names. The national and international characteristics of Hungarian tradenames. The eventual connotative effects evoked by certain trade-names in customers. 2. A brief survey of Hungarian trade-names from the early 19th till the 20th century. 3. A semantical examination of Hungarian trade-names. 4. The fourth chapter is concerned with the structural problems of names, displaying the ways how trade-names are created. The Hungarian orthography of foreign trade-names is also dealt with here, and it is shown which parts of speech are used to compose Hungarian trade-names.
